Shadows and Swords

I remember how, during my summer vacations as a child, I used to visit my grandfather at the parquet factory where he worked as a foreman. Most of the time, I was bored to tears. I would wander over to the workers, but they were always far too busy - and the deafening roar of the band saws made it nearly impossible to talk.

Starting a conversation with them was quite an undertaking. They had to stop entire machines that, through my childish eyes, looked like enormous metal dragons. And those band saws… they were absolutely terrifying.

For the longest time, I begged my grandfather to ask one of the workers to make me a wooden sword. But not just any wooden sword - it had to look real. I wanted something that, in my imagination, could have belonged to a knight, a warrior, or perhaps even a hero from one of the stories I loved.

That is what I remember from 1997.

I was too bored to even put on a plain-colored cape.
